NOLS Alaska Mountaineering – Day 1
Wow, I can’t believe I’m actually here! My flights were good, Louisville to Cleveland was REALLY bumpy, while I slept most of the time on my other two flights. Also I got 150 pages of “Alaska” read, and that book is addicting haha. Finally once in Anchorage I got my bags and was picked up by the Alaska House of Jade Bed and Breakfast. In the car I met one of my course-mates, Ian, from Seattle. He’s nice and is pretty quiet. Once we landed, we planned to meet with another course-mate, Evan, and hang out before dinner. So we thought it would be easy to take the buses since one ran right in front of our B&B to Evan’s hotel downtown. Long story short, we ended up getting a lovely, hour long tour of the entire city of Anchorage, Alaska. Oops!
After meeting up with Evan, we first walked down to the shore to sit and chat by the water. We’re all really excited about the trip, and the two decided I was more manly than them because of my arm muscles. Mwahaha! Anyway, next we looked at some shops downtown, and I tried caribou (my favorite), reindeer and salmon jerky. Eventually we got picked up by the B&B, and Ian and I met Liz, a girl doing a NOLS backpacking course that doesn’t leave until Sunday. We all had caribou burgers back at the house, and then went to bed – where I am now.
It’s so insane, at 9:45pm the sun is still so far above the horizon! I’ve been up for over 22 hours though, so I’m gonna hit the sack. Night!
P.S. Alaska is BEAUTIFUL! These mountains are taller than the Alps! They’re huge!!
